The Importance of Precision in Custom Metal Fabrication at Allied Steel

When it comes to custom metal fabrication, precision is more than just important—it’s a core necessity for success. At Allied Steel, we are dedicated to delivering fabricated steel and metal that meet exact specifications, making certain that every project we handle is completed to the highest standard. From small parts to large structural designs, precision and accuracy are the keys to success, particularly when focusing on safety, durability, and optimal functionality.

One of our most recent projects   illustrates the importance of precision in custom metal fabrication. We had the privilege of fabricating guard rails to be installed on a bridge. Spanning over a mile of guard rails, this project was designed to fit together seamlessly during installation. The guard rails were fabricated in 10-foot sections, and each section had to connect flawlessly with the next. This is where our attention to detail and precision, and sophisticated fabrication processes played a pivotal role.

Techniques and Precision & Accuracy in Fabrication

“To bring this project to life, we incorporated several fabrication methods that ensured precision throughout:”

  • Plasma Cutting the ½” Support Plates: Plasma cutting allows for the precise cutting of steel plates. For this project, the ½” A36 steel plates were cut using our high-precision plasma cutter, ensuring smooth edges and exact dimensions. Any deviation in these plates could have caused alignment issues during installation, which is why precision was our top priority.
  • Saw Cutting and Plasma Cutting the Structural Tubing: The 1/8” thick structural tubing 5”x2” and 3”x2” was used to form the framework of the guard rails. These tubing’s were cut with our brand new Hydmech production band saw to ensure clean, square cuts. We then used our plasma cutting machine to fabricate the different slot holes and cutouts on the tubing for more complex connections in the frame. These cuts needed to be accurate to ensure that the sections would slide into one another seamlessly when assembled and welded together.
  • Precision Welding: Once the components were cut, the next challenge was welding them together. Welding plays a critical role in maintaining the structural integrity of the entire frame. Any inaccuracies during this phase could have compromised the safety and dimensions of the guard rails. Our team made sure that every weld was welded exactly to the specs listed on the customers drawings ensuring that the entire frame would be properly assembled and fit together perfectly during installation.

Delivering on Precision

Beyond the complexities of fabrication, the real challenge was ensuring the final product would align perfectly on-site. There was no room for error, with the installation of over a mile of guard rail. We were able to guarantee a seamless installation process by constructing each section to precise measurements and assuring that the tubing would slide smoothly into the next section.

This project highlights why precision in metal fabrication is so crucial. In addition to meeting the project’s exact specifications, the fabricated guard rails were designed to offer long-term durability and safety once installed on the bridge. Allied Steel produced a product that exceeded expectations through strategic planning, expert craftsmanship, and the use of state-of-the-art equipment.
